Marking the 81st Anniversary of VJ Day
13 August 2026

Saturday, 15 August marks the 81st anniversary of VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, which signalled the end of the Second World War.
This important milestone provides an opportunity for the nation to come together and remember those who served, the VE and VJ Day generation, those who fought, the children who were evacuated, and the many people who supported the war effort on the home front.
To mark the anniversary, council staff are invited to take part in a two-minute silence at midday on Friday, 14 August, and pause to remember and honour that generation and their sacrifices.
As a visible tribute to those who served and contributed to the war effort, flags will be flown at council buildings across North Northamptonshire.
The Armed Forces flag will be raised at:
- The Cube, Corby
- Cedar Drive, Thrapston
- Bowling Green Road, Kettering
- Sheerness House, Kettering
- Swanspool House, Wellingborough
The flags will be raised at the close of business on Friday 14 August and lowered on the morning of Monday 17 August.
