North Northamptonshire Council is inviting expressions of interest from people who would like to play an important role supporting families and schools by joining the Independent School Admission Appeals Panel.

The panel plays a crucial role in ensuring that the admission process is fair and transparent, and provides parents/carers with the means to challenge decisions made by schools regarding their child’s education.

It consists of three trained volunteers who have no connection with the family, the school, or the admission authority. The panel’s role is to hear appeals from parents/carers who have been refused a place for their child at a preferred school.

During the hearing, both the parent/carer and the school's representative
present their cases. The panel must weigh the reasons for the appeal against the school's admission criteria and any potential prejudice to the school. They then decide whether a place can be made available at the school.

What we’re looking for are people with strong communication and decision-making skills, the ability to remain impartial and respect confidentiality, and a commitment to attend training and hearings, usually during term time.Cllr Elizabeth Wright, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, at North Northamptonshire Council

Panel members must not be employed by the Local Authority, or by any school, and must not have connections that could create a conflict of interest.

By joining the panel, you would make a real difference in your community, develop your skills and knowledge for a current or future career, and meet and work with existing panel members. It’s a flexible, voluntary, role with expenses reimbursed.Cllr Elizabeth Wright, Executive member for Children, Families and Education

Appeal hearings take place during the working day, in term time, throughout the school year. The busiest period is between May and July, when appeals for some schools may span more than one day.

This is a voluntary role, and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Applicants do not need legal or educational experience, and full training will be provided.
