Government funding setback for A509 Isham Bypass
09 October 2026

The leadership of North Northamptonshire Council has expressed its disappointment after the Government announced the scheme to bypass the village of Isham had been axed from its major projects list.
The council has long supported the scheme for the A509, which was designed to reduce congestion, improve journey times and support economic growth across the area.
In a letter to the council, the Department for Transport confirmed that the scheme had been removed from the Major Road Network and Large Local Majors Programme following a national review of road projects.
The Government said it had inherited a programme of unaffordable and unfunded schemes and had prioritised projects it considered offered the highest value for money.
While this decision represents a significant setback the Department has confirmed that the scheme could be considered again in the future should a suitable funding opportunity arise and a compelling business case be available.
North Northamptonshire Council remains committed to securing the infrastructure investment its communities need and recognises the importance of this scheme to local residents and the wider economy.
The council will now review the details of the Government's decision and consider its next steps before making any further announcements.
This announcement is extremely disappointing, not just for North Northamptonshire Council but for the many local residents, businesses and road users who have supported the A509 Isham Bypass for a very long time.Cllr Chris McGiffen, North Northamptonshire Council's Executive Member for Highways, Travel and Assets
The need for this scheme has not gone away. The bypass has long been recognised as an important project that would help ease congestion, improve connectivity and support the continued growth of our local economy.
While we are naturally frustrated by this decision, we remain committed to securing the infrastructure our communities need. We will now carefully consider the reasons given by Government, explore all available options and determine what steps can be taken next.
The A509 Isham Bypass is a scheme of significant importance to our residents, businesses and the wider economy of North Northamptonshire.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council
I fully share the frustrations and bitter disappointment of the residents who have waited many years to see progress on the project.
However, we are not prepared simply to walk away from a scheme that could bring such substantial benefits to the area.
I’m fully committed to not giving in on this and we will continue to make the case for investment in North Northamptonshire and work constructively with Government and partners to understand the options available. We owe it to our communities to continue pursuing every opportunity to deliver the infrastructure needed to support future prosperity.
