Council colleagues each celebrate 50 years of service
Housing02 September 2025

Two dedicated colleagues from North Northamptonshire Council are each celebrating an incredible milestone - 50 years of service to local government.
Alan Heels and Phil Doherty, who began working as apprentices at just 16 years old, have now marked up 100 years of employment between them.
Alan initially worked for the council in Kettering, whilst Phil began his council employment for Corby. Both men worked for North Northamptonshire Council from its creation and yet, despite their long careers, it was only recently that Alan and Phil met and realised how much they have in common from their early beginnings in local government.
A stand-out for Phil that he found “most pleasing” was managing the major modernisation and refurbishments of sheltered accommodation projects in North Northants.
Alan commented that, since beginning as an apprentice plumber the council has “looked after me” and that he has done the same for those in receipt of his plumbing and gas skills as, until recently, he was often on the emergency call out rota.
Over the course of 50 years Alan and Phil noted a number of changes – notably being issued with bicycles as their early mode of work transport and later using walkie-talkies for communications.
In celebration of their achievement, the Council are keen to share their congratulations and acknowledge the wealth of experience Phil and Alan have contributed and still offer today in their roles in the Housing Maintenance division. Adele Wylie, Chief Executive of the Council, recently enjoyed spending time with Alan and Phil:
It’s incredible to have two absolute superstars who have worked for us for 50 years each. During our meeting I found them truly inspiring and it’s clear their experience is so valuable. I hope we can all join in recognising the 50-year achievement of both Alan and Phil.Adele Wylie, Chief Executive of North Northamptonshire Council

Alan exemplifies the values we hold dear in public service - integrity, hard work, and a genuine commitment to others. His support for colleagues and tenants alike strengthens our service and sets a powerful example for us all.
