North Northamptonshire Council has unveiled a new Corporate Parenting Strategy for 2026 outlining its commitment to doing things better for children in care and care experienced young people.

As Corporate Parents, or “extra parents” – a term preferred by children and young people – the council has a shared responsibility to ensure that every child and young person who experiences care receives the love, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

The strategy – which has been directly shaped by children and young people – is underpinned by a vision: “To ensure every child in care and care experienced young person in North Northamptonshire is safe, supported, and empowered to thrive. We will act as ambitious, compassionate, and accountable corporate parents – or ‘extra parents’ – who champion your rights, wellbeing, and future.’’

There are four priority areas: Belonging and resilience, Health and wellbeing, Support to fulfil your potential, and Feeling safe and secure.

Our children in care and care-experienced young people deserve the very best from us. This strategy is about making sure every part of the council plays its role as a committed and ambitious corporate parent – supporting our young people to feel safe, valued and able to achieve their potential. I am proud that this strategy has been shaped with the voices of young people at its heart, and I look forward to seeing it drive real and positive change across North Northamptonshire.Cllr Elizabeth Wright, Executive Member for Children, Education and Families

The Corporate Parenting Strategy will be considered by the Executive Committee on 17 February 2026, before going to Full Council in March 2026.

A detailed implementation plan will follow, setting out actions, resource requirements, and performance measures to ensure progress is closely monitored.

The council said the strategy also aligns with its Corporate Plan priority of better, brighter futures.
