Come along and talk to North Northamptonshire Council's Falls Management Service next week
19 September 2025

North Northamptonshire Council's Falls Management Service will be out and about in the community throughout next week, offering advice, support, and practical tips to help residents stay steady on their feet.
Each year about one-third of all people over age 65 will fall. The consequences can be significant, particularly for older people. Last year in Northamptonshire alone 2,541 people over this age were admitted to hospital following a fall. The team wants to support residents in a bid to reduce this number.
Two team members will be present at each location. Come and speak to the Falls Management Service team at the following venues:
- Rushden Lakes - 22 September, 10am - 13.00pm. Opposite the Mountain Warehouse store in yellow shed.
- Corby Town Centre - 23 September, 10am - 13.00pm. Outside the centre at Corporation Street, NN17 1NG.
- Swansgate Shopping Centre - 25 September, 10am - 13.00pm Inside, near the centre of the Swansgate Shopping Centre.
- Newlands Shopping Centre, Kettering - 26th Sept, 10am - 13.00pm. At Newland Court next to shop 26.
These sessions offer a chance to ask questions, get personalised advice, and learn more about how to reduce your risk of falling, whether through exercise, home adaptations, or lifestyle changes.
I’m delighted that our team will be out talking to residents about how they can take measures to reduce slips and fall. Falls are not an inevitable part of growing older and there are things you can do to help reduce the risk of falling.Jane Bethea, North Northamptonshire’s Director of Public Health, Communities and Leisure
These include perhaps speaking to your pharmacist about the medicines you are taking, making simple changes to the home environment, doing exercises to improve strength and balance and to regularly have your vision and hearing checked.
Preventative measures can help too, you're never too old to start moving and gentle activity makes a big difference to the strength of your muscles and confidence in movement starts with small steps. Go on, give it a go!
Looking after your bones to prevent fractures is also key. Osteoporosis weakens bones, increasing fracture risk. One in two women and one in five men over 50 experience fractures, often from minor bumps or falls. Protect your bones by eating a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and doing weight-bearing exercise.
If you can’t make it to speak to us in person, then we can come out to your home to make an assessment of your environment and offer advice.
Assessment and advice
The Falls Management Service is a therapy-led service which offers specialist assessment and advice for people with a concern of falling or a recent history of falling.
The service is made up of a team of specialist falls practitioners. It is available for people living in North Northamptonshire who require support with reducing their risk of falling.
Find support from the council's web pages if you are at risk of a fall. For support with completing our assessment form you can call one of our advisors on 0300 126 3000 or email [email protected].
While many people believe that falling is an unavoidable part of growing older, this isn’t true. One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk is through regular strength and balance exercise. Building strength not only helps to prevent falls and reduce frailty, but it also supports mobility, confidence, independence and can even help people live longer, healthier lives.Jackie Browne, Strategic Director (Communities & Health) at Northamptonshire Sport
Our Get Up & Go programme provides specialist classes for older adults across Northamptonshire. With over 80 sessions running each week and more than 1,000 participants, these classes give people the skills to stay active in sessions and at home. By making strength training a regular habit from mid-life onwards, people can stay stronger for longer and keep living life to the fullest.
The Steady On Your Feet website offers self-assessment tools, tips, and personalised action plans to help individuals stay active and independent. You can also explore Get Up & Go classes , which improve strength, balance, and confidence, and are available across West Northamptonshire.
