Annual schools swimming gala makes a splash at Corby International Pool
Leisure and sports19 June 2026

Young swimmers from schools across Corby and nearby villages came together at Corby East Midlands International Pool on Friday 19 June for The Gathering 2026 – an annual schools swimming gala celebrating pupils’ achievements while reinforcing vital water safety skills during Drowning Prevention Week.
The event welcomed primary schools that take part in swimming lessons at the pool, and gave children the chance to celebrate their progress, confidence and techniques developed throughout the year.
A programme of 20 races showcased a range of swimming strokes and aquatic skills, before the day ended with a fun and energetic float race.
Originally launched in 2024 with eight schools, The Gathering has grown to include 11 schools, 176 children and 23 Young Leaders.
Underpinning the event is water safety, aligning with Drowning Prevention Week. Throughout the gala, pupils were reminded of four simple but life-saving principles:
- Stop and Think before entering the water
- Stay Together and never swim alone
- Call 999 in an emergency
- Float if they get into difficulty
Our dedicated team at Corby East Midlands International Pool once again delivered a successful and enjoyable event, combining essential life skills with sport and fun. I would also like to thank the student volunteers for their excellent support throughout the day.Councillor Brian Benneyworth, Executive member for Housing, Health and Leisure at North Northamptonshire Council.
At the heart of the event is a lifelong message about water safety, and we encourage parents and schools to continue these conversations with children about staying safe around water.
23 students from Brooke Weston Academy supported the gala as part of their Young Leaders qualification, helping with timekeeping, event organisation and encouraging participants throughout the day.
Every child taking part received a participation medal in recognition of their effort, progress and achievement.
During the week, North Northamptonshire Council’s swimming instructors have reinforced the Water Safety Code through Learn to Swim lessons. A display highlighting Drowning Prevention Week has also been set up at the pool, with colouring sheets linked to the Royal Life Saving Society’s water safety messages.
You can find information about swimming lessons and pool timetables on the council website.
