Carer contingency plan
We understand that many carers worry about what would happen to the person they care for if they were unable to provide care due to an emergency. That’s why we encourage as many carers as possible to create a carer contingency plan. This plan sets out what you would like to happen if you are unable to provide care.
Benefits of a contingency plan
Life can be unpredictable. If something happens and you cannot provide the care you usually do, having a plan in place can make a big difference. Contingency plans help ensure the person you care for is looked after in your absence.
These plans are not only for emergencies. They can also be useful for planned events, such as a hospital stay.
What to include
Plans are shaped around you and the person you care for. For example, they can include:
- details of people already known to the person you care for who can step in
- information about the caring duties you usually provide
- any specific needs or preferences
This makes it easier for everyone involved and provides peace of mind.
