Self and custom build
The self and custom build register allows you to express your interest in projects that become available in the future. It also help us plan for the level of demand for these build plots:
- Self Build - Projects where individuals or groups directly organise the design and construction of their new homes
- Custom Build - Projects where individuals or groups work with a specialist developer to help deliver their new home
Once you have registered, we'll keep you informed and let you know when we have granted planning permission for sites with plots where you might be able to build your own home.
The current shortened register can be seen below.
Registration does not guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified, or become available to meet your needs. Planning permission will also be required for any development in the normal way.
Guidance and funding
Further guidance on building your own home can be found at the Self-Build Portal and Buildstore (including mortgage availability).
Home England’s Levelling Up Home Building Fund supports smaller scale development, including loans for innovative housing solutions and serviced plots for custom and self build projects with a minimum of 5 homes.
The Government has also made available a range of funding options for community-led projects.
