Enforcement action for water
We can take two actions for private water supplies or distribution systems - stopping the water being used and making the person responsible fix their system.
Restrict
If there is a risk to human health, we can serve a Section 18 Notice to restrict or stop the supply being used.
It's an offence not to comply with this notice.
Improve
If we can't get an informal agreement to carry out work to fix the problem, we can serve an Improvement Notice (Section 80 - Water Industries Act 1991).
We will confirm what work or measures are needed to fix the issue and how long the person responsible has to to carry out these works.
We also have the power to carry out works and recover the costs.
