Voting for EU citizens

Checking eligibility for EU citizens

We will review the eligibility of all EU citizens currently registered to vote and will either:

  • confirm you are still eligible to remain registered and vote in some UK elections
  • tell you we aren't sure if you are eligible and ask for more information to verify you

We are required by law to conduct this once-only review.

Stage 1 - Our checks

Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain

If you are a citizen of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain and:

  • resident in the UK
  • have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man (or do not need permission)

you will remain on the register of electors and don't need to do anything further.

You will remain eligible to vote in future local government and PCC elections, but not UK Parliamentary elections.

Other EU countries

If you are a citizen of one of the following EU countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • The Netherlands
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Sweden

Historical electoral registers will be searched to confirm if you were registered to vote in the UK on or before 31 December 2020.

If you meet eligibility criteria at this stage, you will receive a letter confirming that you will remain on the register of electors and don't need to do anything further.

You will remain eligible to vote in future local government and PCC elections, but not UK Parliamentary elections.

Stage 2 - Asking you for information

If we can't confirm your eligibility, we will write to you if records show you're an EU citizen and ask you to confirm if you meet the new criteria.

We will make 3 attempts to contact you. This could be by:

  • email
  • post
  • telephone call
  • canvasser knocking on your door

If you have received a letter or email asking you to confirm your eligibility, you'll need:

  • use log in details sent to you and reply on GOV.UK
    or
  • complete a paper form included in your letter and return it to us

If you are not eligible or don't respond to the request for information, you won't remain registered to vote and will receive confirmation in writing. If you are eligible, you can re-register to vote.

If you're unsure, email [email protected] or phone 0300 126 3000.
