Keeping healthy22 January 2025

Help is at hand for men in North Northamptonshire who want to make healthier lifestyle choices in the New Year and beyond.
North Northamptonshire Council has teamed up with Northampton Town Football Club Community Trust to bring back a 12-week programme which is aimed at men aged between 30 and 65 with a body mass index (BMI) over 28kg/m2.
Free of charge for those taking part, the Fit Cobblers programme is offering 25 places for the weekly sessions which take place between 6:00pm and 8:00pm at the Hemmingwell Community and Skills Centre in Wellingborough.
In the first hour of the sessions, participants will take part in classroom-based activities looking at topics such as nutrition, exercise, alcohol and food, using strategies such as SMART goal setting to help build long term healthy habits.
In the second hour the participants will take part in a physical activity session such as walking football, circuit training, yoga and long walks.
We’re delighted to be able to once again fund this excellent programme which has been inspirational for so many men who want to make healthier lifestyle choices.Cllr Gill Mercer, Executive Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing
Introducing positive changes towards healthier lifestyles has so many benefits and I’d encourage anyone who’s interested to get in contact.
It’s great to be working with the Northampton Town FC Community Trust once again on providing this hugely popular programme.Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council
While it’s easy to have positive intentions at the start of a New Year towards a healthier lifestyle it’s not always so easy to maintain the dedication required. That’s where programmes such as this are a tremendous benefit and real-life examples have shown that the course has made a big impact on people’s lives.
We’re committed to making North Northamptonshire a healthier place and I’m delighted to see this great work. Well done to those who have taken part previously and all the best to those taking on the challenge this year.

Success isn’t just about losing weight, it is about becoming aware of your conscious decisions, creating a healthy relationship with food and exercise, becoming active, and prioritising your own needs to help create a better version of yourself. We are looking forward to delivering this programme once again.

Case Study
The Fit Cobblers has seen success in lots of different forms over the years however in the last men’s programme, Travis lost over 10kg in a 12-week period just from putting simple practices into action.
I managed to lose weight during the programme and I’m still going down now, and my daily step count has gone from 6,000 to 40,000.Travis
I made lots of friends on the programme and we stay in contact via WhatsApp and meet up to have a kick around on Thursdays which is good, because not only has the programme helped me lose weight and be healthier but also helped my mental health and to make lots of friends and to be more active.
Since the end of the programme, Travis joined the Claret Mountaineers for their 2024 challenge of the Jurassic Coast walk and completed the 12 mile walk with an elevation of over 3,000ft in 10 hours.
Losing this weight helped me gain the confidence to take part in the Claret Mountaineers Jurassic Coast Walk.Travis
I really enjoyed the challenge and despite it being difficult I managed to complete it; I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do that walk before the programme, but I am now looking forward to doing the walk next year too.
