Next week’s meeting of North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive will receive a report seeking approval of the council’s Carbon Management Plan.

In July 2021, NNC declared a Climate and Environment emergency and aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The Carbon Management Plan is the first step and sets out how NNC will achieve the goal, by establishing its baseline carbon emission and identifying key areas of focus to ensure the targets are met.

Broken down into priority areas (including buildings, fleet and carbon off setting) it has been developed with input from services across the council, to ensure that the ambition is achieved and looks at a variety of actions from behavioural change through to improving energy efficiency of buildings and large scale investment decisions in carbon reducing technology.

Right from the beginning of NNC, we have been clear that tackling climate change and looking after the environment must be the ‘green thread’ that runs through the organisation. We take our responsibility of reducing emissions across North Northants extremely seriously, which is why I am delighted that we are now in the position for our Carbon Management Plan to go to the Executive for discussion and approval.Cllr Harriet Pentland, the council’s Executive Member for Climate and Green Environment

As part of the work to develop the plan, the Carbon Emissions for the council have been calculated at 13,607.56 tonnes CO2e per year, with the largest emitters being identified as electricity, gas and emissions from closed land fill sites.

Since we declared a climate and environment emergency in July 2021, Cllr Pentland and her Executive Advisory Panel, alongside Officers from across NNC, have worked hard to put together this Plan and I look forward to discussing it in more detail and how we plan to make changes to ensure we are carbon neutral by 2030.Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council

NNC has set aside £1m of funding across the next three years to support the council on its journey to becoming carbon neutral.

North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive will meet on Thursday 22 December from 9am at the Corby Cube and the full agenda is available online. The meeting will be live streamed via YouTube.
