Coronavirus17 December 2021

Statement issued today by Public Health Northamptonshire.
Lucy Wightman, Director of Public Health Northamptonshire says:
“The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has today published Omicron figures at local authority level.
“There are 39 confirmed cases of COVID-19 Omicron variant and 177 highly probable cases in the last seven days in North Northamptonshire bringing the total to 216.
“There is now confirmed community transmission of the Omicron variant nationally as well as locally. Early evidence indicates that Omicron is more transmissible than previous strains, with cases doubling around every two days, compared to seven days for the Delta variant.
“We are still learning about Omicron and the related risks, so the sensible option is to keep calm, exercise caution, and follow the Government Plan B rules.
“Work from home if you can – reducing your contact in the workplace you will help slow transmission.
“Use mandatory COVID-19 certification to enter nightclubs and venues where large crowds gather. This will include proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. You will have to use the NHS COVID-19 pass to enter unseated indoor venues with more than 500 people, seated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people, and any venue with more than 10,000 attending.
“Wear a face covering - this is now mandatory in shops and on public transport, and also in most indoor settings including cinemas and theatres.
“You should also daily with a lateral flow test for 10 days if you are a contact of any COVID-19 case. This is for all ages from over 5s, (it is recommended that these younger aged children who haven’t been used to doing LFTs regularly for secondary school) are tested by parents or carers.
“Testing is a really important tool in our armoury. Around 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not have symptoms and these rapid lateral flow tests help find cases in people who have no symptoms but are still infectious and can give the virus to others.
“This is why it’s also important to take a test before going out and mixing with people in crowded indoor places, or visiting someone who is at higher risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19. You can pick these up from pharmacies
“Find where to get rapid lateral flow tests and also order online for home delivery.
“It’s really important to stay at home if you're not feeling well. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, however mild, do book a PCR test. There are several sites in North Northamptonshire, but you will need to book before going. If you can’t book online you can call 119.
“As well as testing and following Plan B rules there are other COVID-safe behaviours which all Northamptonshire residents can, and should, follow to reduce the risk of infection.
“As COVID-19 transmits mostly between people at close range through inhalation it’s really important to open windows if you’re meeting inside now its colder.
“Regular and thorough hand washing or hand sanitisation remains an essential part of good hygiene and prevents the spread of many viruses. As well as COVID-19 handwashing can also reduce the spread of colds, flu and stomach bugs.
“And finally, vaccination provides powerful protection against severe illness with COVID-19 so getting the jab is still the most important thing you can do to protect yourself. There is a vaccine locally for everyone eligible and we are happy to vaccinate those who have not yet had their first or second dose, as well as support people to access their booster jab."
