Weight management

If you're overweight, losing weight has many health benefits. People who are overweight have higher risk of:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • type 2 diabetes
  • some types of cancer
  • arthritis
  • back pain

Being underweight isn't good for your health either.

If you are concerned about yourself or someone else, or you want to find out whether you are a healthy weight visit the Body Mass Index BMI on the NHS website.

Slimming World

Slimming World offers fully funded referrals for 12 consecutive weeks, with the consultant of your choice at a local venues.

You'll find:

  • you can eat lots of normal, everyday food with no worries about weighing or measuring - and you'll never have to go hungry
  • there'll be no embarrassing revelations about how much you weigh as it's is never disclosed
  • a friendly and highly trained consultant to run your group who will guide and support you
  • there are no strangers - only friends you haven't met before - all with the same hopes and dreams and all ready to help you fulfil yours

Eligibility

You must:

  • be a resident of North Northamptonshire
  • have a BMI of 28 or above
  • not be pregnant 
  • not already be a paying member at Slimming World (or a paying member in the last three months)

A second free referral into the service needs approval from a health professional (e.g. a GP)

If you were a referred member before April 2024, you can only get another referral if it has been 12 months since your last.

Northampton Town Football Club - Fit Cobblers

Join a free 12-week lifestyle behaviour change programme for adults, including creating a healthy relationship with food and exercise, becoming active and prioritising your own needs to help create a better version of yourself.

Sessions include an hour of classroom-based activities looking at topics including:

  • nutrition
  • exercise
  • alcohol and food
  • using strategies like SMART goal setting to help build long term healthy habits

They also include an hour of physical activity such as walking football, circuit training, yoga or long walks.

Eligibility

  • Men aged 30 to 65 years old
  • Living in a North Northamptonshire
  • With a BMI over 28kg/m2

NHS Weight Loss Plan

Use this free 12-week diet and exercise plan (downloaded more than 4 million times) to help you lose weight safely and keep it off.

The plan is broken down into 12 weeks so you can:

  • set weight loss goals
  • plan meals
  • make healthier food choices
  • get more active and burn more calories
  • record your activity and progress

Type 2 Diabetes

If you are concerned about developing Type 2 Diabetes, you can check out your risk and access a range of support services on Live well NHS.

The National Diabetes Prevention Programme operates in Northamptonshire, and your GP can refer you to the programme if they feel it is appropriate for you.
