NNC support and HMOs we run

We do not contribute directly to any bills for HMOs run privately - including their bills such as council tax and rent.

Our Temporary Accommodation and Transition teams operate some HMOs. Our Resettlement team provides supports to some residents of HMOs.

Temporary accommodation

Our Temporary Accommodation team operates some non-licensable HMOs (exempt from licensing) for the provision of temporary accommodation for short periods of time until suitable accommodation can be found. This is for single people only.

The Transitions team also manage a small number of HMOs that are used to accommodate single people experiencing homelessness, on a short to medium term basis until they are ready to live independently. The support that is offered helps to transform the lives of vulnerable people accessing this service.

Resettlement team

How does the NNC Resettlement team interact with residents in HMOs? What is their role in encouraging integration and community cohesion?

Once a decision is received confirming that an individual has leave to remain, our Resettlement team will try to reach out to them, as they only have 56 days to move from the property.

We will find out if they want to stay in North Northamptonshire.

The numbers that do are usually low - to date our team has helped 25 people by:

  • supporting them to register with a GP
  • claim Universal Credit
  • help them open a bank account
  • find suitable accommodation

They may also attend resettlement drop-in sessions that we run in Corby and Kettering. These offer wider support including connecting refugees with local community groups and with providers who can help with things like learning English and finding employment.
